East-ender: Fayetteville folk drive local youth football program

By TOM GILBERT For Public Opinion We are lucky to have groups that offer young folks positive things to do. And the Fayetteville Browns are a top-notch example. During the mid-1970s, the only midget football in the area was in Chambersburg. They had two teams in the Mountain Valley League -- the Steelers and the Browns. In 1975, the Browns forfeited most of their games because of a lack of players. So the league would not accept the Browns in 1976, and their equipment was given to popular Fayetteville Fire Chief Jim Cutchall in hopes the fire company might sponsor them. Cutchall realized, however, the need to have football people involved. So he asked Rich Schoenleeber if he would try to put together a group. Schoenleeber did, and in 1976 the Fayetteville Browns entered the league. "All of this happened around June of '76," Schoenleeber said. "At that time we had some used equipment, no organization and no place to play."
